Chapter Twelve

Whoever was behind this robbery/kidnapping/murder would be heading to Cyprus, too. There was a possibility that they were even on the same plane as we were, though there was no way to tell for certain. I had never seen the vicious woman’s face and Dex would likely take another flight—or I would, if I were him—but there had to be others in the gang. That left Peaches and I sitting in the eighth row, scrutinizing everyone who boarded our flight.

“What about her?” Peaches whispered as a woman wrapped in a pink puffer coat squeezed past.

“Too tall and too pink,” I said. “Vish would be about five feet eleven inches, maybe, and she just couldn’t be into pink.” We now referred to the vicious woman as “Vish” for short.

“How do you know? I mean, I get that you can sometimes superhumanly intuit past events but where did this insight come from?”

I considered the question. “Probably just a guess, one which isn’t any different from what a lot of people experience, if they let themselves. Vish just seemed so focused and angry—cruel, even. To me, that just doesn’t spell pink.”

“But I wear pink and I’m no pushover,” she pointed out.

I smiled. “Pink is your power color.”

Meanwhile, everyone who boarded was a Goldilocks of possibilities from being too short to too wide. When we found ourselves studying women passengers’ facial expressions, looking for signs of deviousness or guilt, we stopped. That wasn’t getting us anywhere.

By the time the plane was on the runway waiting for takeoff, we had briefly sunk into our own thoughts. Though I felt horrible about not engaging the privacy feature back at Rupert’s, at the same time I couldn’t waste energy on self-recrimination. I was too busy worrying about Rupert and Evan, what may lay ahead of us in Cyprus, and a plethora of other concerns too numerous to mention.

“I can’t believe that Ev didn’t pressure you into studying your phone features more carefully,” Peaches said, beside me in the aisle seat. I prefer the window and we had booked business class for the two-seater experience. She was still annoyed with me, apparently, and maybe with herself, too. I got that, I really did, but she wouldn’t let it go. “I mean, yes, his manuals and updates are usually pages long but it’s critical stuff, and every time he runs an update, you need to pay attention, Phoeb.”

“I actually do pay attention to Evan in great detail. I try to focus on the man rather than the manual—get it?” If I was hoping to wiggle out of this one with humor, it wasn’t working.

She threw up her hands—literally lifted them into the air. “I mean, you’re married to the developer. That’s got to flatten the learning curve for you somewhere. He must have given you private lessons?”

A memory of Evan’s most recent private phone lesson came to mind. We had been sitting on our hotel room balcony in Hawaii, hours away from hopping a plane to an island off Fiji.
